What is communication?

Most of us take listening and speaking for granted, however, they are complex processes which require the central nervous system and the neuromuscular system to function well together. As a speaker, we each formulate thoughts and verbalize feelings, opinions, and needs. We try to find the right words to use. All of this requires getting that information from the brain and then to the mouth or pen. As a listener we need to be able to process what was said. In order to communicate, we need all of this to happen.

Having worked as a Director of Special Education for over 30 years in the public education sector, I can easily speak of the value of contracting with Dr. Hopkins for students of all ages. She is an expert evaluator across all disability areas and her IEP contributions are invaluable. Her collaboration with special education and speech-language staff and rapport with families is outstanding. She readily provides supervision and training for veteran and new SLPs alike, and her Tele-practice skills will exceed your expectations. Most importantly, Dr. Hopkins is a skillful child focused therapist students love to see and their progress reflects her commitment to excellence.

Dr. Hopkins, or Dr. Sandy as my kids say, has been able to work with my seven year old son and five year old daughter this year. The kids have shown marked improvement since beginning their speech therapy and look forward to their lessons each week. Dr. Sandy does a wonderful job individualizing lessons based on each child’s learning style and needs. She is always kind and patient with the kids and knows how to motivate them towards their shared goals. She is a wonderful asset to have in our community and we look forward to another year working together!

My twins began working with Sandra Hopkins when they were six years old. They were diagnosed with dyslexia, dyscalculia, disfluency, and functional speech disorders.

Most importantly, my boys loved working with Sandy, whom they saw two times a week. She made them feel at ease and everything they did felt fun. Their speech began to improve right away and she worked with myself and my husband to help them at home as well.

As they were homeschooled, Sandy worked closely with me to create a curriculum which would help them learn without feeling stigmatized and encourage self-motivation. The boys were always encouraged and supported. With her guidance, they began to read on their own at age ten.

By the time they were twelve years old, they no longer carried a diagnosis of any kind and were voracious readers. When they entered middle school they excelled without a hiccup.

They graduated from a prestigious university Magna Cum laude and Summa Cum Laude respectively.

None of this would have been possible without Sandy, who played a pivotal role in helping my twins not just speak well, read well and do math, but be well in every sense of the word.
